Dr. Scott Sweeting as the sole finalist for the role of Superintendent for Thomasville City Schools
THOMASVILLE, GA - The Thomasville City Schools Board of Education continues to make progress in naming a new superintendent.
The Board worked closely with Georgia School Board Association Search Director, Dr. Samuel King, to identify the characteristics desired in the new superintendent; adopted qualifications for the position; approved a recruitment announcement; reviewed applications and interviewed candidates that appeared to have closely met the qualifications. In addition, the Board reviewed results of a survey of the community and school system staff to seek input as to the characteristics desired in the new superintendent.
Twenty-seven (27) applications were received from a broad range of applicants. From these applicants, ten (10) were interviewed as the Board sought to determine those applicants best qualified for the position.
At least 14 calendar days before taking final action on the position, the Board is required to make available to the public documents for inspection and/or copying concerning as many as three persons under consideration whom the Board has determined to be best qualified for the position.
The Thomasville City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to name Dr. Scott Sweeting as the sole finalist for the role of Superintendent for Thomasville City Schools. Dr. Sweeting received his Bachelor of Science from Florida State University and, after graduating, accepted a role as a Science Teacher with the Thomas County School System in 2001 where he continues to make his home to this day. He received his Masters of Education (2004) and Doctor of Education (2013) from Valdosta State University.
Dr. Sweeting holds the titles of “Director of Grades 5-12 Curriculum & Instruction” and “Director of New Teacher Induction”. He oversees many additional responsibilities for Thomas County Schools including New Teacher Induction, Project Lead the Way Computer Science Pathway, and Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center Program. He is recognized regionally as a leader in both science and computer science education and recently collaborated with PBS to create the science series “Science in Action”, “Tiny Mics, Big Ideas”, and coordinating the highlight of the Artificial Intelligence Curriculum at Thomas County Schools. Dr. Sweeting is an active member of the local community including partnering to develop an Outdoor Environmental Science Education Center known as Gentian Creek Preserve, serving on the board of Hands on Thomas County, among many other roles.
