Mrs. Hawthorne held a junior and senior parent symposium on January 22 at 6 p.m. after being inspired by a parent during a conference to demonstrate for other parents what she did for that parent, so that is exactly what she did Monday night. The night began with parents looking at sample projects and looking through novels their child would be doing and reading throughout the remainder of the school year. Parents were then given a tour of Mrs. Hawthorne's extensive webpage, with Mrs. Hawthorne pointing out all of the parent and student resources available to help parents feel more informed about what is happening in Mrs. Hawthorne's classes throughout the each nine weeks. Parents were shown class calendars, curriculum maps, where on her webpage parents could email Mrs. Hawthorne, scholarship information, test prep information, as well as where they could locate nearly 90 percent of all the materials used in class and over 95 percent of all of the reading materials on audiobook format and in pdf, thus taking away the "I can't find/lost my book, reading guide, or handout" excuse. The night ended with Mrs. Hawthorne teaching a poetry lesson over We Wear the Mask by Paul Lawrence Dunbar for the junior parents and The Passionate Shepherd and The Nymph's Reply for the senior parents, with the parents serving as Mrs. Hawthorne's students. All were fully engaged in the lesson and some were even answering the teacher's questions. Clearly, the evening was a success as at the end of the night, Mrs. Hawthorne receiving a rousing ovation and numerous parents approached her afterward to express their appreciation for both her efforts in the classroom and for holding the symposium for them.
